Raya and the Last Dragon – Movie Trailer

I don’t know much about Raya and the Last Dragon, but the movie trailer did manage to find it’s way into my world a couple of months ago, and it looks impressive. But, that said, I’m a sucker for CG movies and the animation and detail they bring to our screens. This one looks beautiful, stunning, amazing … etc. etc. … on and on and on.

Details I could find about it are scant, but what I do know is that Disney announced the film in August 2019 at their D23 Expo, so it hasn’t really taken that long to create (although I expect it was in production well before the announcement). I can’t find any evidence of a book that it has been based on, so it does seem to be an original Disney story. Let me know if you know of a book. I’d like to take a look at it :). It’s also good to see that Disney are exploring cultural diversity in their stories.

Disney’s spin best describes the premise.

Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when sinister monsters known as the Druun threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity.

Now, 500 years later, those same monsters have returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the last dragon in order to finally stop the Druun for good. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than dragon magic to save the world—it’s going to take trust as well. – DISNEY

Raya and the Last Dragon was originally scheduled to be released in the United States on November 25, 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film’s release has been delayed to March 12, 2021. (Source Wiki)
(To be released in other countries at much the same time – eg. Australia 25 March 2021, New Zealand 1 April 2021)

Raya looks like an inspiring story with a main character who is striving to overcome the odds and prevail. The fantasy setting is based on the region of South East Asia, and that in itself brings the promise of a wonderful setting and exploration of cultures that are rich and diverse. I’m looking forward to seeing it.
