I know I’ve been late to the Artemis Fowl party (I’ve only just started the series in the past 6 months), but now along comes a new spin-off series starring his younger twin brothers. And as soon as I started reading The Fowl Twins I was hooked.
With Artemis out of the picture (he’s off to Mars), Beckett and Myles step in to keep us entertained with an adventure that’s so full of action and fun it was hard to put down. I’d call them twins on opposite extremes. One is methodical, super-smart and in control, the other is a little rough around the edges, haphazard, and gifted with a connection to animals.
Eoin Colfer has put together a wonderful set of characters in this new series, and his way with words is something that never ceases to impress me. He’s a master at keeping the story going along at a perfect pace, and the skill to add in odd details and quirkiness that seem to effortlessly flow. I found the storytelling and characters very addictive. The plot was full of twists and turns and I found myself reading it any chance I got.
Lord Teddy Bleedham-Drye, the age-defying Duke of Scilly Isles is such an entertaining villian that I probably liked him more than I should. He reminded me a little of the Dick Dastardly type character from my childhood. Added to the mix is a tough nun called Sister Jeronima Gonzalez-Ramos de Zarate of Bilbao, head of an international organization called ACRONYM that investigates magical creatures. These two villians work with and against each other toward their own nefarious goals.
For those of you who have read this far, here’s a little surprise from the man himself.
This is a wonderful start to a new series that builds on the familiarity of its hugely popular predecessor. Eoin Colfer is a master of words and he never ceases to impress me. The Fowl Twins is funny, energetic, exciting, quirky, and difficult to put down. Highly recommended.
