Big news recently was the release of the new trailer for The Witches, which is scheduled for release on Netflix. I’m not familiar with the original book that it’s based on but now it’s on my radar. The Witches was written by Roald Dahl and released way back in 1983. From what I can gather, it has built up quite a following over the years and I’m guessing there are some pretty excited fans out there drooling over this new offering.
“Witches … they’re real and they hate children.”
The last incantation of The Witches was a movie in 1990 starring Anjelica Huston and (surprisingly) Rowan Atkinson. News on the street is that it was well liked and that the creepiness of the characters scored well with audiences (and even gave some a few nightmares).
Fast forward to 2020, the year that has been like Halloween all year. Now it’s time to take a fresh look at this story about the age-old problem of different types of people in conflict. In this new version, Anne Hathaway takes on the role of leading witch, and I think she looks amazing – she reminds me of someone she worked with in The Devil Wears Prada.
As a fan of Anne’s previous work, it’s good to see her show us an eccentric character now and then. And it seems she has taken to the role like a witch to a broom – I can’t believe how mean she looks as the ultimate kid hating witch. The trailer looks impressive. Great visual style, great soundtrack, great costumes, great effects, and I can even see a hint of Remy from Ratatouille thrown into the mix. Let’s hope that the movie delivers on what the trailer is offering.
“See, girls. He would exterminate those (b)rats!”
As yet another movie casualty of Covid-19, The Witches was originally set for an October theatrical release, but will now be released on Netflix for streaming on 22 October 2020. I hope you enjoy this Halloween treat. Take a look at the trailer for yourself and let me know what you think.

This looks like the perfect movie to curl up and watch for Halloween. I’ll be grabbing some (lots) snacks and giving it a go.
